RIMC:
How long
have you been in the business?
Danny Monteiro:
A long 37 years
RIMC:
Who inspires or influences you musically?
Danny Monteiro:
Growing up I would say Stevie Wonder/
Peabo Bryson. Nowadays I get a good vibe from Eric Benet/ Frank
Mckown/ Robin Thicke.
RIMC:
What would your fans be surprised to know about you?
Danny Monteiro:
That I'm actually real quiet at home.
RIMC:
What CDs are you personally
listening to now?
Danny Monteiro:
I'm listening to "Copasetic Is" Dome Records, by
Mikelyn Roderick. Mikelyn is my homegirl from Onset and a former
member of Motown's "By All Means", she has been my duo partner the
last 2 years and I just finished shooting her music video for her
single "Slippin". Real great CD. Also a lot of "FOURPLAY"
RIMC:
What
movie would you say could be your life story?
Danny Monteiro:
Definitely "The Five Heartbeats" I grew
up and got my start with 'singing groups' and I went through a lot of
the heartbreak and dues paying and sorrow of trying to succeed in this
crazy business.
RIMC:
Who are your favorite local artists?
Danny Monteiro:
Of course my girl Lysa Davis, but I have
so many, first I'll say Tiny Tavares, because we started out together
and had early success, Armsted Christian, my "A List" band-mates and
musical director/mentor/vocal coach, Joaquim "Jackie" Santos, my
longtime friend and leader of "the A list", Manny Barros of TWYCE we
feel the same vibe. Mikelyn Roderick, my lifetime friend and musical
partner. I think everyone I've ever worked with and did good music
with can be added to this list. I love collaboration.
RIMC:
What’s
your favorite food?
Danny Monteiro:
That's easy, Jag & pork chops, doesn't get any
better than that, don't forget the "apple sauce".
RIMC:
What other talents do you have?
Danny Monteiro: I'm
a good writer, I think my ability to sell a song, I'm always very
conscious about the audience .
RIMC:
What do you do or what gets you in the mood before you perform?
Danny Monteiro:
You know, Tanguray and Tonic with a
"twist of lime"
RIMC:
What has been your most embarrassing moment?
Danny Monteiro:
Falling off the stage at the "Checkmate"
in Rochester, New York. I was performing with the "Authentics" and we
were doing a dance routine, they had just waxed the stage floor and
when we were supposed to slide up to the microphones, I kept on
sliding "new patent leathers" and slid off the front of the stage
about a 4 foot drop. I ran around and got back on stage to hit the
final harmony note. Audience thought it was part of the act.
RIMC:
What has been your proudest moment in life so far?
Danny Monteiro:
My family, my children.
RIMC:
If you ever won an American Music Award
or Grammy, who would you thank and why?
Danny Monteiro:
I would thank God first, and all the
people musical and non-musical who have taken time from their life's
to share with and support me in my dreams.
RIMC:
On behalf of everyone here at RI Music Club, we
thank Danny Monteiro for his time!
